If you’ve been a customer of a car insurance company for years and years, chances are you never even look at your actual policy. Every year at renewal time you only look at the bottom line where it states how many bucks are coming out of your account.
But do you ever look at the fine print, and the area that has the personal details, such as how many years you’ve been licensed, how many kilometers the vehicle is driven on average, and where?
Chances are you’ll be surprised to find all sorts of inaccuracies. I know mine had my incorrect birth date, and the number of years licensed was about one third of what I know to be true. Most of us get our license when we’re sixteen, so it’s not hard to do the math.
Anyway, does any of this stuff really matter, or is it merely a matter of averages. You might think that the insurance companies just toss a bunch of numbers into a hat, shake them up, and out comes the amount you must pay every month to lawfully drive your vehicle.
In actuality, rates are determined by all sorts of criteria, like where you live, and what you drive. Drivers in cities pay more because there’s more chance of your car being stolen. Of course, if you drive a car that looks good to the thieves, your rates rise even more.
